TIG welding intership at Metec

The boys from the second-year class of Tartu Vocational College participated in a month-long TIG welding internship at Metec.

The school had provided them with MIG/MAG semi-automatic and MMA electrode welding experience which gave the boys a good starting point to start learning TIG welding. The interns thought it was a valuable experience and they were happy they had the opportunity to intern specifically at Metec.

Here are some thoughts from the boys after they had successfully completed their internships. Read more here.

Scania Gryphus with front protection system

At the end of 2018, the keys of the first Scania Gryphus trucks were handed to Dutch army. Over 2000 vehicles will be delivered to the Dutch Ministry of Defense. Metec is proud to be a member of Scania supply chain as vehicles physical protection systems provider and was involved in the bullbar and the foldable step project since development phase. In great cooperation between Scania and Metec engineers, we can admit that each of the smallest details are tought through and multiple prototyping rounds are results of the products which are as strong as possible for protecting truck and as low weight as possible for low fuel consumption. Metec manufactures both products at its own modern factory in Tartu, Estonia.

One video for you to enjoy.

Robots have arrived

It is increasingly difficult to find good employees in every corner of the world. And it would be a shame to waste good employees with simple and hard work. To solve those two problems at once, Metec commissioned two industrial robots — one for sheet bending and another for welding — which are now available and in service.

Second tubular laser has arrived

Metec has been continuously developing its technology to meet the future needs of our customers. In October 2019, a second tubular laser from German company Trumpf was added to our equipment.

With the new device, pipes can be cut in and clipped up to a 45-degree angle. In addition, it has a specific tool for precise drilling and threading — this device with additional features is the only one in Estonia and new in the world. Both technological additions give our designers new ways to design products that can add new functionalities to products or lower manufacturing costs. Compared to existing milling machines, we can cut pipes with a diameter of up to 170 mm (20 mm more than before). Also, not remotely less important is the fact that we significantly reduce our supply risks after receiving the second laser since the load on the existing milling machine is about to reach its maximum. Increased power will enable us to provide cutting services upon request starting from 2020.

Metec is a champion in tube processing

We are pleased to announce to our customers that we, at Metec, have successfully completed the introduction of a new generation pipe bending technology.

It is known that during pipe bending the material is stretched and that, depending on the material’s tolerances (alloy and similar), stretching can have different results for same-size pipes. Because of this it was very risky to make different tube holes before bending because their position after bending could be very different. However, the new bending technology controls the stretchability of the material throughout the bending process and ensures that pre-cut openings are exactly where they need to be after the bending process.

Investments to tehnology

In the recent years nothing revolutionary has taken place in the field of metal processing technology but innovation is constantly ongoing – machines are getting faster and more precise and new solutions allow us to shorten the standby time needed to re-sett the machines or upload and unload the product parts. It is precisely on these considerations that Metec is with the help of German and Swedish high technology, updating its laser cutting and pipe-tapping technology.

Paperfree manufacturing

The First digital terminals in our sheet and pipe processing department work centres were assembled. With it Metec loses all paperwork in production. All the assignments, designs, plans and guidelines for the tasks are available digitally, making the documentation 100% actual. At the same time feedback and necessary measurement results are being enacted.
All the employees and master engineers save time doing their job, as they earlier had to meet up several times in a day to transmit the tasks.
By the first quarter of 2019 when the whole factory will be covered with similar work centres, we will save 200,000 sheets of paper and printing ink.
